iZombie Season:02

iZombie S2

Well, I know I did loads of complaining, and it wasn’t exactly a very even season of iZombie, and at times they seemed to be making up the rules as they went along, but I’d rather take it the way it was than not have it all. And it definitely ended on a high note.

My biggest complaint, obviously, was Liv’s over-the-top (how many times have I typed these three words this season?) antics while on most of her brains. They were normally for laughs, and usually well earned, or they led to big changes, like when Clive severed ties with her after her superhero brain adventures. But I feel that this season they decided to change things up and make Liv take on a brain’s most dominant trait, whereas last season, that wasn’t always the case. Not only did it lead to some ridiculous gags, I also feel it’s very short-sighted to say a person amounted to this one personality trait. When she ate the brain of the prostitute in the pilot, she didn’t try to sell her body to anyone. She became a kleptomaniac and spoke the victim’s native language. When she ate the amorous artist’s brain, she spoke in extreme detail about things she saw, picked up a paintbrush and tried to get back together with Major. So I’m a little disappointed they decided to settle on this angle.

Episode Title: Salivation Army
Original Airdate: 4-12-16

Even though they aired Eps. 18 and 19 back-to-back last week, I had to split the reviews up to give them each enough attention. I had planned on posting this last week, but never got around to finishing it, so here it is a week later.

Stacy Boss sends his goons to take out Don E. and Chief when he realizes Blaine’s Utopium is still being sold. Chief dies, but Don E. convinces the hitmen that Blaine is still alive, just as he walks through the door. Blaine escapes, but Don E. tells Boss’s goons that Blaine was sleeping with Peyton, while ratting out Boss. Don E. is shot in the chest, but now that he’s a zombie, he lives. Blaine shows up at Peyton and Liv’s, infuriating Ravi. Blaine leaves again to get some dinner, but while he’s gone the goons show up and kidnap Peyton, hoping that it will prompt Blaine to turn himself in. When Blaine returns, he and Ravi (who’s just gotten back together with Peyton) go to Boss’s office. As Ravi waits in the car, Blaine takes out all of Boss’s men and saves Peyton, who is extremely scared and grateful, much to Ravi’s chagrin.

iZombie S2

I had planned on reviewing this episode and the finale together, since they aired back-to-back, but after a few minutes, I realized I wasn’t giving this episode enough attention, so I split them up.

Episode Title: Dead Beat
Original Airdate: 4-12-16

With Major arrested for the Chaos Killings, Ravi tells Liv everything Major has been up to. Hoping to save Major, they decide to thaw one of the victims (Drake, of course), to prove that Major couldn’t have killed him, only to discover the deep freezers empty. After Major’s bail hearing gets him out of jail for the Chaos Killings, Clive is then able to rearrest him for the Meat Cute Massacre, after someone in lock up confesses to having sold Major all the weapons, for a plea deal. After not having a “proper” meal for several days, Major is on the verge on turning “Romero,” which would be far worse behind bars with plenty to snack on and, in turn, infect. A desperate Liv confesses everything about the secret world of zombies to Clive. He doesn’t believe her at first, until she stabs herself in the chest and turns. That night Major is released, thanks to Clive’s tampering, effectively destroying both the Meat Cute and Chaos Killer cases, plus his relationship with Bozio. After Van du Clark sends his henchman to kill Liv and Major, Ravi accidentally gets in the way, killing Janko, whose brain his targets then devour in order to gain info on where the newly thawed zombies are being held, which Liv glimpses in a vision, seeing a very living Drake in the basement at Max Rager, of course.

Episode Title: Reflections of the Way Liv Use to Be
Original Airdate: 4-5-16

The case-of-the-week has Liv and Clive looking into another murder at the local university, where Liv runs into some of the old frat bros from earlier in the season. The dead girl whose brain Liv turns into stir fry was incredibly Type A, running for Student Senate and a CI for Seattle PD after being busted for selling Adderall, so we get to see Det. Benedetto from Vice again (Enrico Colantoni), but he’s not exactly the good guy one would hope for in a cop. When busting dealing college kids, he turns them into CIs, without approval from higher-ups, in order for them to get their charges dropped and him to bust more drug dealers, which is all very dangerous.

Episode Title: Pour Some Sugar, Zombie
Original Airdate: 3-29-16

This week Liv and Clive investigate the murder of a stripper, who had just called Peyton with the intention of ratting out her two-timing boyfriend who just happens to work for Stacy Boss. Of course the boyfriend is a suspect, plus several other strippers and that weird weatherman who pops up as a suspect from time to time, Johnny Frost. One day it really will be him, I swear. Liv’s secondhand personality is mainly a lot of yelling at people, but there is one weird scene where she gives Peyton a lap dance at a strip club to try to trigger a vision. It doesn’t work.

Episode Title: He Blinded Me with Science
Original Airdate: 3-22-16

And, after yet another hiatus, we’re back. This week Liv and Clive investigate the murder of a scientist who was burned alive. She had been a researcher for a drug company with results that went very awry for one poor test subject, which leaves a few suspects, like the scarred test subject and the deceased’s former partner. But during all the questioning, Liv has a vision of the scientist working for none other than Van du Clark at Max Rager. Liv goes under cover to learn more, but gets caught by VDC when she tries to sneak into the super secret basement lab. However, she has another vision of a full-on zombie, which leads her to believe that Max Rager is experimenting on the undead in said super secret basement lab (which is totally true).

Episode Title: Eternal Sunshine of the Caffeinated Mind
Original Airdate: 2-23-16

This week we met the peppier side of our zombie heroine, after she ate the smashed brains of the owner of a local coffee shop. The victim stepped outside to admire some sidewalk art and got an air conditioner window unit dropped on her noggin. Ouch. It was a pretty standard case with an ex-lover running the rival coffee shop across the street, a thieving employee and a stingy daughter. The thing that did surprise me about the case was that they actually solved it, but the mastermind still got away while someone else took the fall. Usually Liv and Clive get their man (or woman) in the end. Sadly I wasn’t really down with Liv’s secondhand optimism acquired through her brainscotti. She spent most of the episode being obnoxiously positive, but it served no purpose. Though she straightened up by the end when she finally discovered that Gilda is Rita and Rita is Gilda (thanks to a perfectly timed visit from Major who is also now privy to this info) and then punched her in the face, before evicting her. Finally! It was a very satisfying sight to see.

Episode Title: The Whopper
Original Airdate: 2-16-16

While digging for the tainted Utopium in the empty field, Ravi and Major come across a body, but not the one they’re looking for. Clive and Liv begin to investigate, and the victim was a pathological liar, who also worked for Stacy Boss. Liv gladly makes a burger out of his brain, hoping to trigger a vision of where the tainted U might be buried, and by the end of the episode she achieves her goal and the trio finally find their buried “treasure,” and not a moment too soon, because Ravi’s test rat (that was cured, but reverted back to Team Z) dies.

Episode Title: Physician, Heal Thy Selfie
Original Airdate: 2-9-16

The show stepped slightly away from its regular formula this week as Liv and Clive are handed three HEADLESS corpses. Unable to snack ‘n’ solve, Liv instead lunches on the brains of an iPhone junkie, whose murderless death was the result of tweeting-and-walking (in front of a city bus). Liv laps up internet fame, as she is unable to stop tweeting and instagramming every moment of her day, while Clive grows crankier that she’s unable to have one of her visions to help the case.

Episode Title: Fifty Shades of Gray Matter
Original Airdate: 2-2-16

With an unexpected two weeks off, we’re back with an excellent episode of iZombie. Liv eats the brain of a librarian, murdered by hemlock poisoning. But instead of donning cozy cardigans and horn-rimmed glasses, Liv becomes the horniest zombie on the block, as the victim wrote erotica in her spare time, having just sold her first book, leaving the suspect pool full.
