Jessica Jones S:02 E:02

Episode Title: AKA Freak Accident
Originally Aired: March 8th, 2018

“Maybe I am a freak, but someone made me this way. And this lab rat’s got some complaints.” With Jessica’s anger management issues, you definitely won’t want to be the one on the receiving end of those complaints.

monster hunt

One thing I really liked about this episode is that it merged the themes of season one with this season’s storyline. Trish has a background that is unexpectedly similar to Jessica’s. They both have past trauma with sexual abuse caused by charismatic men who are used to getting everything they want. What’s worse in Trish’s case is that she was essentially pimped out by her mother so Dorothy could continue to live vicariously through Trish’s fame. It would be easy to read this episode as a #MeToo inspired but it is important to note that pre-production on this episode started almost a year and a half before Harvey Weinstein was outed. I think that fact makes the episode even more commendable for its decisions to tackle a subject that wasn’t widely addressed. I am interested in seeing if they tell us that this incident was the cause of Trish’s obsession with powered people and the idea of saving people.

nit all monsters
Jessica spends the episode following the clues left by the Whizzer to figure out who killed him and who is responsible for what happened to the two of them. Unfortunately, her first lead Dr. Koslov turns out to be a dead end, leaving us to wonder if he was an innocent man who maybe knew too much or an evil doctor who was taken out by his bosses. Malcolm spends all of his time trying to help Jess and avoiding his addiction, supplementing drugs for construction work and casual sex, an act his boss also finds comfort in. After her recent medical news, Jeri takes a day off fueled by drugs and hookers while she tries to come to terms with a yet unknown diagnosis. Her bender is only going to last a day as she eventually kicks the women out of her home and plans her next move. You can see Jeri’s strength and determination, you wouldn’t want to be on the opposing team, but she may lack focus leaving herself vulnerable.

I think that the major theme of this season will be the past coming back to haunt you. Trish has to relive her experience with Max her abuser, Jessica is still battling the effects of Kilgrave, the loss of her family and now, how she was experimented on. Sometimes it’s not the long-forgotten past coming back on you. Jessica is visited by the police over what happened to the Whizzer but the most notable example of the recent past coming back on them is the return of Will Simpson. I can’t wait to see what else will come out of the dark recesses of IGH and Jessica’s psyche, when she begins her anger management classes, as the season continues

It has been nearly 2 and a half years since the premiere of Jessica Jones season one and it is time to break out the whiskey because the self proclaimed bitch is back. This year is all about the power of women. Every episode was directed by a woman, each episode has its own poster designed by a woman, its three main characters are women and it was released on International Women’s Day. We have finally reached the climax of what Netflix and Marvel have been working for these last two plus years. Four heroes with five combined seasons have been building to this moment where our heroes take on the ultimate weapon of the Hand. After the events of last week, it comes down to two races, can the Hand get the substance out before the rest of the team shows up to rescue Danny and put an end to the Hand and their evil plans for New York. Episode Title: Ashes, Ashes
Originally Aired: August 18th 2017

We are now three quarters of the way through the season and the Hand has everything they need to complete their plan, all it has cost them is two of the five fingers. With the changing leadership landscape will the Hand easily be defeated or will they be more dangerous than ever as their desperation ramps up. You would think with the Defenders out numbering the Hand leaders 4 to 3 that it would be to their advantage, unfortunately the only action in this week’s episode was hero vs hero. Episode Title: Take Shelter
Originally Aired: August 18th 2017

Last week I speculated that this episode would contain a massive action scene and I wasn’t really right but I wasn’t wrong either. While it wasn’t the extensive knock down fight I was expecting, nearly the first 8 minutes of tonight’s episode was action and they sprinkled in a couple of smaller fights as well to keep the episode high energy. Episode Title: Royal Dragon Originally Aired: August 18th 2017

“Bullet proof, blind ninja and whatever you are” Danny isn’t exactly smooth in his recruitment speech to the group. I didn’t expect going in that after 5 seasons one of my favorite episodes would be one with no action, but the quality of the interaction and finally getting some answers made for a highly satisfying episode. Jessica Jones Season 1 Round-Up

So here it is, my final round-up for the first series of Jessica Jones. First thing to say, it’s been great reviewing the show for Channel Superhero, I hope to continue doing reviews for the site in the future. As I stated in the first of these reviews, I had no knowledge of Jessica Jones prior to watching the show, although I’ve been making myself aware of the history of the character as I’ve been watching the show. I always think that the strength in anything based on a comic character is that it should make you want to keep watching even if you’ve never heard of the character and I have to say that Jessica Jones has more than succeeded. This is easily better than the first season of Daredevil in terms of the Marvel Netflix shows and I have to say, it’s one of the best parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far.
