Episode Title: Stronger Together

Original Airdate: 11-3-15

Momentum. That’s what serialised television is all about. The pace at which story, character and narrative arcs occur, and whether or not a show can maintain the enthusiasm established in its opening episode. Given how much story was crammed into Supergirl’s pilot episode, would the series’ second episode maintain that momentum, or would it revert to a more leisurely pace to allow development with the core elements of an ongoing, 22-episode season?

Greetings earwigs and earworms, Cryptkeeper Bubbawheat with another special treat for you today on day 28 of our 31 Days of Tales From the Crypt. We have something for you to listen to instead of just read as I join our own Elwood Jones as well as Daniel Lackey for their new podcast venture TV Good, Sleep Bad where each month they take a look at a couple episodes of cult television. This is only the third episode, but I think they’re off to a great start and they will also be sharing their episodes here on this site so if you like what you hear then come back every month for a new episode. Here we get a little bit animated as we discuss the pilot of the animated spin-off series Tales From the Cryptkeeper as well as a chilling episode that may or may not have inspired 30 Days of Night where it’s not for over a month before it Comes the Dawn.

Supergirl S:01 E:01

Hands up if, as a kid, you crushed hard on Helen Slater when she starred in 1984’s turgid Supergirl movie? puts up hand

Hands up if you’re sick and tired of melancholy, angsty, monotone crybaby superhero depictions of your favorite DC Comics superheroes? puts up hand

Hands up if you can’t understand what the hell it is that DC has been doing to most of their characters in peddling that abortion they call the “New 52” line – now DC You? puts up hand

Okay, then you’ll really enjoy Supergirl, the latest television incarnation of a DC hero to hit the airwaves. Accompanying Arrow, The Flash, and the soon-to-air Legends Of Tomorrow, DC’s Supergirl series brings with it a weight of expectation from multiple parties – fans of the character, feminists looking to have a serious female contender among the throng of spandex-wearing men on our screens, and, of course, casual viewers.

Episode Title: Puss in Books
Original Airdate: 10-22-15

The title of this episode is obviously a play on the 17th century fairytale Puss in Boots, a story of a talking entrepreneurial cat who comes from humble beginnings to be the pet of a great lord. As the title suggests, this episode focuses on Cooch, who during the filming of an educational PSA is outed as being illiterate. There is no villain, returning or otherwise in this episode, instead, the “bad guy” is Sgt. Agony who is back for the first time since episode 1. Agony stumbles across a YouTube video of Cooch struggling with cue cards while looking for clips that promise to blow his mind.

supermansion ep5-1

Since being defeated in an accounting battle by Jewbot, he has held a grudge against Rex and the rest of the League of Freedom, and plans to use a rule about minimum education standards to kick Cooch out of the mansion.

The secondary story-line follows Ranger as he makes a heartbroken trek across the country looking to restore his faith in the American Dream by traveling to Detroit.supermansion ep5-2

Ranger was disillusioned about the state of America after teaching US history to Cooch and learning some alarming facts. Unlike the scene in the first Avengers movie where we see Captain America’s notebook of things to learn about, no one bothered to mention the bad side of American history to Ranger: the assassination of JFK, the resignation of Nixon, the Iran Contra, 9/11 and Joe Millionaire. Ranger has a crisis of faith and sets off on his American-built motorcycle to reignite his love for America. Along the way he meets Reggie (voiced by Breckin Meyer) who tells him the best way to experience the Dream is to get high and ride into the desert to meet his friend Hawkfeather.

After Ranger’s breakdown, Cooch is left with principal Rex, school bully Saturn, chemistry teacher Brad and home economics teacher Jewbot, and one week to prepare for her GED exam in order to stay in the league. Rex spends most of his time, worrying about Cooch, arguing with Sgt. Agony and answering phone calls that would make you think his number was 876-5309. Saturn is completely unhelpful teasing Cooch and attacking Rex with spitballs. Brad is more focused on getting back into an intimate relationship with Cooch than being a good teacher. Jewbot on the other hand is desperate to be a positive influence in the Robin Williams from Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting mold.

While Cooch is battling a catastrophic case of ADD, Ranger finally meets Hawkfeather, who tells him that he must fight and defeat his spirit animal in order to heal his spirit or die trying. A man who dresses up as a giant star spangled bald eagle has a surprising spirit animal.supermansion ep5-3

A fire breathing albino buffalo is the symbol of Ranger’s inner turmoil over the loss of his belief in the American Dream.

Will Cooch pass her test and get to stay in the mansion, or be forced to return to her life as a regular cat? Will Ranger find his faith and be able to defeat his spirit animal, or will the team possibly lose two members? Find out next Thursday October 29th, on an internet-connected device near you.

Episode Title: A Shot In The Dark.
Original Airdate: 10-15-15

The inspiration for the fourth episode of SuperMansioncan can be summed up by Dadant, dadant, dadant dadant dadant dadant dadant dadaaaaaaant. This episode is split into two main story lines at a nearly 50-50 split, one that introduces another returning villain and the other bringing back the threat of episode 1 and a decreased budget. Within these two story lines each character has something to do which is a first for the series and shows potential growth of the series and its writers. Another first for the show is something that a lot of movies, such as Transformers 4 are criticized for: product placement.

Fear the Walking Dead Season:01

ftwd

Well, it was a bit of an uneven maiden voyage for this spinoff series. I thought things started off well, with a great sense of world and character building as this very serious epidemic started, but too soon it all fell apart. And not only did the story go south halfway through the season, but there was little to glean from the characters as well, leaving one to wonder “Why am I still tuning in?”

Heroes Reborn S:01 E:04

Episode Title: The Needs of the Many
Original Airdate: 10-8-15

Before starting to watch Heroes Reborn, I intended to go through most of the first season of Heroes again in order to prepare. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it nearly as far as I originally thought I would be able to, but there were a few things that I have noticed even just from refreshing myself with those first few episodes. And one of those elements of the show I had already forgotten about until I re-read my recent review of the original first episode. It’s a little disappointing to see that the ratings for this show haven’t been as strong as they were when this show was still new, as I’m quite fond of this show compared to, say Gotham. But this episode continues to develop some of the mysteries while dangling several others just out of reach.

Episode Title: Let’s Talk About Rex.
Original Airdate: 10-8-15

Let’s talk about Rex baby, let’s talk about all the good things and the bad things that may be in this episode. The third and final episode of the initial release of Supermansion that will cover themes of the circle of life.

An injured Rex is forced to face his mortality while Cooch is in heat and welcoming almost all suitors. While the last episode was dominated by movie references the pop culture inspiration for this episode seems to be things seen on TV. We see a Tom Cruise-esque couch jump on a Jimmy Fallon inspired talk show, and a call back to the McDonald’s nothin’ but net commercial from the early 90’s.
