Batman: The Brave and the Bold S01 E06

Episode Title: Enter the Outsiders!

Original Airdate: January 9, 2009

Batman has been in the pages of DC comics from the earliest days of the golden age to the present, and had a key role in every phase including the flood of new characters in the early 80’s created to capture the Superfriends crowd. This episode finds an intriguing way to combine one of the golden oldies with a group of teens from the far out 80’s phase, and seems perfectly in place in the first decade of our current millennium.  Continue reading Batman: The Brave and the Bold S01 E06

Episode Title: Seven Little Superheroes

Greetings once again, true believers! This week’s episode of Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends is about to give you more heroes than you can handle. We have not one, not two, not even a mere three superheroes. Get ready for Seven Little Superheroes.

Spidey 6-1
This time, a mysterious supervillain known as The Chameleon is on the loose. This villain can change his appearance to perfectly copy anyone and he has plans to make life difficult for Spidey, Iceman and Firestar. But that’s not enough for him. He also has his eye set on four other heroes, both famous and obscure: The Submariner, Doctor Strange, Shanna the Jungle Queen, and none other than Captain America himself. Each of the heroes gets a strange letter summoning them to Wolf Island Mansion for a “most unusual get together.” There’s one problem, though. Since Aunt May is visiting a friend with cats for the weekend, the Spider Friends have no choice but to bring the dog, Miss Lion, along for the trip. Agent Carter Season 01

Marvel's 'Agent Carter' starring Hayley Atwell & James D'Arcy

Ah parting is such sweet disappointment. Or sorrow, not sure which, but disappointment is definitely what I’m going with for the Season Finale of this Marvel ‘tie-in’ show that aired between, and acted as a filler during, the mid season break of Marvel’s ‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ The Season– or rather Series finale, given that the show was only 8 episodes long with no word of being renewed or having plans for a second season, ended on a note that was quite a letdown. More than that, looking back at the series as a whole, provides a new perspective on a show that seemed like it was going to be something great, but ended up being quite pedestrian. Before continuing with my Season wrap-up of ‘Agent Carter’, feel free to take a look at my thoughts and expectations from the series before it aired over here.

Gotham S:01 E:18

Episode Title: Everyone Has a Cobblepot
Original Airdate: 3-2-15

Throughout most of this season I have been complaining about how Gotham never seems to know any subtlety. Any reference it makes it has to hit the nail directly on the head as hard as it can, which is not what I really wanted from this show. Not only that, but it goes so far over the top that it comes all the way around the horn. But if you know that’s what you’re going to get, then you can just run with it and have a good time while it lasts. This episode is one of those times where it just went so far over the top that it came back around again. It’s the much touted about appearance of the Dollmaker, a couple of the worst moments of CGI, and also a moment of questionable morality once again on the head of Jim Gordon. Overall, it was another ridiculous episode, but it had its moments here and there.

Batman Beyond S:01 Ep:06

Episode title: Heroes

Original air date: February 21, 1999

What is it with the writers of this show including so many homages to the Marvel Universe? What with “Golem” featuring those Mardok inspired dolls let alone Terry frequently comes across like Peter Parker in a different suit. Did the writers forget that Batman is part of the DC universe or something? Well don’t expect anything to change with this episode as this time the writing team decide to essentially rip off “The Fantastic Four”. Okay perhaps I’m being a little harsh as the first lesson you learn in writing class is that there are no original ideas. Yes it’s kind of a downer of a thing to hear on day one, but even with this in mind it is perhaps a little on the nose with its source of inspiration to say the least.

Episode Title: Day of the Dark Knight!

Original Airdate: January 2, 2009

One wonderful aspect of the world of comics is the vast tapestry of worlds and genres that can be intertwined. This episode takes us to an oft overlooked corner of the DCU, the medieval realm of knights and wizards and the mythology of Arthurian legends. Additionally, I am always thrilled when I see an appearance of Jack Kirby’s Etrigan the Demon in a story in any medium. Continue reading Batman: The Brave and the Bold S:01 E:05

Episode Title: Swarm

I remember one of the biggest fears of childhood was the fear of being stung by a bee. The memory of the first time I was ever stung by a bee, on the school playground, is still extremely vivid in my mind. So this week’s episode of Spider-Man and His Amazing friends would’ve been exceptionally freaky for youngsters like me. Get ready for Swarm.

Episode Title: Valediction

Original Airdate: 2-24-15

And there it is. After a short but very interesting Season, Marvel’s ‘tie-in’ show to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, in the form of an 8 episode mini-series spin-off of a fan favorite character introduced in one of the movies, is at an end. ‘Agent Carter’s Season Finale nicely wraps up all loose ends and explains every tie bit and set up dropped during the course of the show. It’s a satisfying resolution to the story of Peggy Carter and her colleagues, while thematically concluding a more emotional story arc for the main character, making its title, ‘Valediction’ completely appropriate.
