Episode Title: The Naming Convention
Original Airdate: 9-18-13
Welcome back to another episode of the webseries We Might Be Superheroes where we continue our conversation where we left off last week. As always, if you can’t wait to check out the rest of the episodes, visit their official website. This week finishes up the initial adventure of our two heroines and they officially gain their hero names Hope and Faith. Enjoy!
Channel Superhero: What’s the biggest influence on the characters of Hope and Faith?
Pat Bishow: I sort of based them on El Frenetico and Go-Girl (a film I made in the 90s) and Oscar and Felix from the odd couple. Go-Girl was both smart and could kick ass. So I split her up. We wanted them to be very different so you can’t imagine they could ever live together.
Alex Covington: I think in the creation of Faith, from my perspective, I draw from other nerdy, yet super-cool girls, like Nancy Drew. But honestly, there is a lot of Faith within me. LOL I’m a pretty hopeful person, I look on the bright side of things, and I believe in people. But I’m not ditzy about it!
Rica de Ocampo: It depends on what’s going on in the moment. When I’m playing Riley, I tend to think of my brother. (His name is Migo) He’s an amateur MAMA fighter who plays a ton of video games, teaches tennis to children, and once had an obsession with competitive eating. My brother tends to be blunt and straightforward like Riley. Often when I’m eating my 4th cookie and spouting out a harsh yet hilarious comment, I think about how my brother would do it.
When I’m in the superhero get up and beating people up as Hope I’m influenced by a number of things. A lot of the time I think about my friends and family that I grew up with. We all took Tae Kwon Do and used to do karate demos around the Northern Virginia and DC. Most of the time it was a 10 year old me fighting my 24 year old, 6’2″ brother, Kofi. He and I would choreograph fun fight sequences where I would kick him in the face and throw him around a bunch.
The other main influence has got to be Buffy. I’m a Buffy fanatic! And if I’m being super specific, I often think of Faith (Eliza Dusku) when I’m playing Hope. Faith was such a badass chick with a heart of gold who at one point strayed from the hero path but returned and found redemption. I think Hope is so similar!
