Episode Title: Livewire*

Original Airdate: 11-16-15

*Author’s note: Due to a major terrorist attack in Paris on November 13, the original episode due to be broadcast, “How Does She Do It?”, was pulled from airing by CBS due to similarities between the plot and the tragic events in France. “Livewire” was intended to be the 5th episode of the season. “How Does She Do It?” will be transmitted on November 23rd.

Family. You can’t choose it, and it’s something that defines us. “Livewire” sees the arrival of Kara’s adopted mother, Eliza Danvers, for more than the début episode’s cameo, which gives us the always awesome Helen Slater. Eliza’s fractured relationship with Alex brings with it a nice little plot twist in Hank Henshaw’s involvement with Supergirl. The show’s always really been about family, and “Livewire” has a focus on this aspect of the franchise (due mainly to its Thanksgiving setting) that is rather touching. Even the episode’s villain, the titular Livewire, finds herself brought into the framework of family in a way that actually gives the normally fractious Cat Grant a moment of melancholy. Okay, it’s not all warm-fuzzies here, but thus far in the show’s run it hasn’t taken this much time out of its breakneck pacing to actually deliver character moments that work as well as they do here.

Episode Title: Batman Stands Pat
Original Airdate: February 24, 1966

If you recall, when we last left Gotham City, Robin and had been zapped by the Mad Hatter’s hypno ray and Batman had been coated in a thick layer of quick-drying plaster. No one…not even the Caped Crusader could possibly survive this trap. Of course, if he doesn’t then part two of this story is going to be pretty boring. Let’s see what happens in today’s episode, Batman Stands Pat. Continue reading Batman S:01 E:14

Episode Title: Brad Medicine

Originally Aired: 11-12-15

The latest episode of SuperMansion is the first of the series to present a strong message as well as a ton of pop culture jokes. It is also the first episode that features Brad. It turns out Brad is not a natural-born superhero like Rex, but instead is the result of an experiment at Optocorp, a combination of real life “evil” corporations and Oscorp from the Marvel universe. Brad is the first and only subject to survive the administering of their serum. It increases his size and strength, and makes him virtually invulnerable. The only thing that didn’t increase in size is his head. Oddly enough, it is not the serum that makes him pink, it is just his natural coloring.

Since Rex left his home as a young man, the League has been his family. Like all families, it has continued to go grow over the years. Brad joined the team just a year ago after Rex found him beating up a drug dealer in Piston City. Every day for a year Brad has been hiding the fact that all of his abilities come from the serum Optocorp continues to provide him, and when a shipment fails to arrive, he quickly begins to revert to his normal self.

We are introduced to two new villains in this episode: Ratapult and Whiplash, a new evil duo that is trying to steal a baby panda from the local Storm City Zoo. However, this non-dynamic duo is not the main antagonist for Brad in this episode. It is what the majority of the team fears most, game night. The first Friday of every other month is officially league game night and is strictly enforced by Rex. Rex loves board games of all sorts, but is a sore loser and winner, and must physically threaten the rest into playing with him.

Optocorp has cancelled the drug trail that made Brad a superhero and has moved on to a new project, Project Chad. He is disposing of all the remaining serum and refuses to give what’s left of the stock to Brad. The only response Brad can come up with is to plan an Ocean’s 11 style heist. He originally plans to go alone because he is afraid to let the team know his secret, but when he is caught in his natural form by Cooch, she offers to help him so she can get out of game night. Once Cooch is on board, Brad decides that going with a team is best. Unwilling to ask the rest of the league, he turns to the villains that are locked in the basement of the mansion.

Things we learned during this episode:
Super powers don’t make you a hero, it is your actions.
Being a family isn’t about blood, it’s about who you can count on and who you are there for.
Rex and Lex can shoot lasers from their metal hands.
Jewbot can project semi-corporeal holograms.
Ranger sings America the Beautiful while masturbating.

Will Brad get his serum back and once again become a hero? Will he regret the choice to form a team with super villains? And what will Rex do if they don’t make it back for game night?  Find out now on an internet connected device near you.

“My boyfriend had a bicentennial.” – Buffy

It’s only been a couple of weeks but already we are faced with another two part episode, but more importantly this episode also marks the first Buffy birthday something which would become a running theme with future Buffy birthdays falling on either the 13th or 14th episode of each season. This however doesn’t mean Buffy has an easy week, as Spike and Drusilla return with a new plot to assemble the limbs of a powerful demon known as “The Judge”.

Episode Title: Enter Zoom
Original Airdate: 11-10-15

Wow, this show goes from 0-60 pretty damn quick. Ever since the beginning of season one, this show has hit all the high marks in many different ways, especially with the ways that it rarely relies on the villains of the week. There’s usually another purpose to them, something that relates to the larger story at hand, or they will come back to play a role in another episode sooner or later. This episode is the Flash firing on all cylinders, it has some of the most hilarious scenes, it has some great heart-to-heart between Barry and Joe, and it has some balls out action between Flash and our first look at Zoom, and boy is it a doozy.

Webseries: DC Superhero Girls S:01 E:01 – 05

Welcome back to another Webseries Wednesday where I take a look at a webseries out there whether it’s pro or amateur, even though I’ve been off my game for a few weeks. This time around I’m taking a look at the new DC Superhero Girls which is supposedly DC’s attempt at broadening their horizons to make superheroes appeal to girls as well as boys. But the real question is: don’t superheroes already appeal to girls, there just aren’t enough superhero girls to relate to? I watched the first five episodes which are available on YouTube and you can watch the first full episode right below.

Gotham S:02 E:08

Episode Title: Tonight’s the Night
Original Airdate: 11-09-15

I won’t go so far as to say that this episode falls back down into the hill of annoyability, but in terms of tropes and predictability, this really took the cake. I mean between obvious trap is obvious, car sideswiped by a truck out of nowhere, and villain dangling from a high place holding onto the arm of our hero, it’s pretty thick with them. Luckily, we also get a nice sidetrack with the Riddler on his own path through the woods, and a little bit of Harvey Bullock to lighten the mood.

Episode Title: Fight Or Flight

Original Broadcast Date: 11-9-15

Foundations. Supportive, solid, grounded; foundations provide strength when times get tough. When the walls fall or the roof blows off, you can always see the foundations to any structure remaining. Supergirl’s opening two episodes have been relatively light on foundational character development, at least in terms of giving the lead cast much more than superfluous angst to handle. “Fight Or Flight,” the third episode in this début season, sees Kara’s foundation-laying antics crank up a notch; fighting a nuclear powered villain is but a sidebar to a fairly hefty character development arcs here, with Kara’s relationships between James Olsen, Winn Schott, Cat Grant, and her sister Alex, finally given some pretzel-twisting shades of grey (no, not like that, you pervert).

Episode Title: Now
Original Airdate: 11-9-15

The Group is slowly starting to come back together. The episode opens with Deanna looking at the mess that Alexandria has become in just a few short hours. In the background we see Michonne telling Maggie about Glenn’s plan to save everyone else. Suddenly everyone hears Rick yelling to open the gate, as he’s headed toward town with half the horde right on his heels. (Wait, how did he escape the completely surrounded RV? Then run that far, through that many Walkers unscathed? Just because he’s Rick Grimes? Um, no. Unacceptable. I was highly anticipating that escape scene, and I feel cheated.) Suddenly hundreds of Walkers surround the walls, leaving the remaining Alexandrites terrified and convinced they won’t live through the night. They go to raid the pantry and start to turn on each other, until Deanna’s son, Spencer, steps in and tells everyone to go home because they don’t want to look back on this day as the one that tore them apart. Really he just wanted to sneak some hooch and crackers, so he could get drunk and blame his mom for all the town’s problems.
