Buffy The Vampire Slayer S:04 Ep:04

Episode Title: Fear, Itself

Original Air Date: October 26, 1999

“It’s Giles. With a chainsaw” – Xander

Here we have an episode which is probably best known for giving the Buffyverse its most beloved long running joke as Buffy and the Scoobies attend a frat house Halloween party, only to soon find that the spook house elements are real.

Still reeling from the whole Parker situation of the previous episode it’s kind of refreshing  for the writers to not just give us another moping Buffy episode as Halloween has once more come to Sunnydale and surprisingly for a town built  on a Hellmouth the vampires, demons and other assorted supernatural elements actually choose to see the holiday as a night off, viewing the holiday as kinda tacky Giles informs us here. That being said it wouldn’t be a Buffy Halloween without something happening and surprisingly it’s something of an accident that the group that the group don’t get to celebrate a quiet Halloween watching um….Fantasia (darn video shops).

Episode Title: Wild At Heart

Original Air Date: November 9, 1999

“Well, I ran away and went to hell … and then I got through it. I’m kind of hoping Willow won’t use me as a model.” – Buffy

One of the most nagging aspects of having seen the series in its entirety is knowing what lies ahead for these characters and where their individual paths will take them. At the same time certain characters lose their original appeal as the series went on be it the result of attempts by the writing team to evolve their character or more likely the actor throwing their weight around over how they wish to play their character. A prime example of this of course being Willow who went from the shy and adorably akward witch in training to becoming something of a grating presence in the series, something which seems to be a running theme for any character which Alyson Hannigan plays for long enough (see also American Pie and How I Met Your Mother). It was of course only on this rewatch that I was finally able to pinpoint when her character went from likeable to a general bugbear for the series with this episode really proving to be the ground zero.

TV Good Sleep Bad #10

Good Sleep Bad: A monthly podcast in which Elwood and Lackey (The Nightmare Gallery) delve into cult and obscure TV shows from Superheroes to the Outer Limits they watch it all.

This week The Vern (Vern’s Video Vortex / As You Watch Podcast) recommended we check out “Jess Archer Versus” the short film which has now become a great web-series.

Jess Archer Vs 3

Playing like a mash up of Veronica Mars meets Spaced this high school set comedy is packed with fun pop culture refrences and some razor sharp writing as we uncover when we look at both the series and original short film.

For our second feature its a chance to revisit a childhood favourite and key anime title with “Speed Racer” as we argue its importance in Anime history while re-evaluating the live-action adaptation.

Episode Title: The Harsh Light of Day

Original Air Date: October 19, 1999

“Being A Vampire Sucks.” – Harmony

It would be just typical that when Buffy seems to be getting her life in order, having established herself as the slayer on campus and got shot of her demon roommate but no things are once more thrown into confusion when she finds herself falling for fellow student Parker, while the appearance of a now vampire Harmony heralds the return of Spike to Sunnydale who is keen to find the “Gem of Amara”. The Vampire version of the Holy Grail and which will also make him in the process invincible to stakes and able to walk in the sun.

Episode Title: Living Conditions

Original Air Date: October 12, 1999

“Alright. Why don’t you quit hiding and come out and face me like a … thing” – Buffy

A frustrating episode to say the least this week as despite settling for the most part into college life Buffy is still finding herself plagued with issues in particular her roommate Kathy who not only maintains a permanently sunny demeanour but also because of her insistence of logging every little thing. However when Buffy starts to find herself being plagued by a series of nightmares she soon begins to suspect that Kathy is the evil responsible for them and not just because she insists on plays Cher’s “Believe” on a constant loop.

Episode Title: The Freshman

Original Air Date: October 5, 1999

“Some friends of Buffy’s played a funny joke. They took her stuff, and now she wants us to help get it back from her friends who sleep all day and have no tans.” – Xander

So last time we where with Buffy and the Scoobies, Sunnydale High had been reduced to a smoking hole in the group and Angel had left for L.A. following his break up with Buffy and rejoining Buffy at the start of this season the various members are no less scattered as Buffy, Willow and Oz prepare to start at UC Sunnydale.

Opening to Buffy and Willow on stakeout at a cemetary while they wait for a potential vampire to rise from his grave, Buffy thoughts are more on what classes she is going to be taking than her Slayer duties in a great scene which see’s the pair completely miss the vampire who himself has second thoughts about attacking Buffy and Willow when he notices their arsenal of weapons they have brought with them and instead run of, leaving the pair to continue their wait completely oblivious to the fact that their intended target has just legged it.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer S:03 – Wrap Up

Season 3 has been kind of a weird one to revisit especially as it played a lot differently than my nostalgic memories with this season being certainly one of the heavier “Monster of the Week” seasons while our big bad in Mayor Wilkins who basically spent most of the season hiding out at city hall. Occasionally he sent a henchmen to deal with Buffy or appeared to be playing the puppet master, but ultimately it was all a lot of distraction while we edged ever closer to the big finale.

Episode Title: Graduation Day Parts 1 & 2

Original Air Date: May 18, 1999 / July 13 1999

“Tea is soothing. I wish to be tense.” – Giles

So here we are at the end of another season and what a weird one it’s been seeing how our big evil in “The Mayor” has been happy to be the evil lurking in the background, coming out of his office occasionally to shake his fist at Buffy and the Scoobies so like their namesake you half expect him to complain that he would have gotten away with it, had it not been for you darn “Pesky kids”.
At the same time this season has really about Faith and her corruption to the dark side as she went rouge and teamed up with the mayor. Their father / daughter relationship really being confirmed here as in the first half of this two part finale she is tasked with poisoning Angel which invariantly puts her on Buffy’s hit list for more than one reason as it soon becomes clear the only cure is Angel drinking the blood of a slayer. Needless to say Buffy wastes little time here in her plan to feed Faith to Angel and giving us the long promised Slayer Versus Slayer showdown.

Episode Title: The Prom

Original Air Date: May 11, 1999

“Once again, the Hellmouth puts the “special” in “special occasion”.” – Oz

So with the season finale just around the corner it of course makes perfect sense to have a monster of the week episode. For while Buffy and the Scoobies are busy making plans for prom, it would seem that someone else has their own prom plans for a bunch of hellhounds.
Okay so perhaps it’s not just another straightforward episode as the threat of being mauled by hellhounds is more of a secondary plot here as the writers attempt to tie up loose plot threads in the run up to the Sunnydale High prom.

Episode Title: Choices

Original Air Date: May 4, 1999

“Raise your hand if you’re invulnerable…” – Mayor Wilkins

So here we are on the final few episodes of the season and it’s this week that the various pieces are finally starting to be brought together and that we also get the first real showdown between the Scoobies and the Mayor as they learn about his plans to obtain the “Box of Gavrok” essential for his Ascension. Things however don’t go according to plan as while trying to obtain the artefact Willow ends up being captured by the Mayor and leaving the two groups heading towards an inevitable confrontation
