In the aftermath of the Walker massacre, everyone scatters. Carol wants to be left alone after she finds out about Sophia, even refusing to be present when the others bury her; T-Dog, Shane and Andrea bury and or burn the bodies; Daryl goes off into the woods angry at Sophia’s death; Beth goes into severe shock, needing her father’s medical attention; Hershel disappears to the town bar, with Rick and Glenn chasing after him; Lori chases after them with no real intent except to be obnoxious and cause more drama; Dale putts around like an annoying old man. Bad people turn up.

Episode Title: Pretty Much Dead Already

Tensions mount between the Group and Hershel when Glenn spills the beans about the Walkers in the barn. Shane wants to leave, fearing for the Group’s safety and feeling that Sophia is a lost cause, but Rick wants to convince Hershel to let them stay since Lori’s pregnant. Hershel agrees, but only if the Group can live by his “we don’t kill the infected” rule. Dale becomes even more “old-man-knows-best” annoying by having yet another talk with the stubborn Andrea, then taking the Group’s stock of guns to hide, only to be stopped by a very angry Shane, who just found out Lori is pregnant and knows the chances are good that the baby is his.

Episode Title: Secrets

The day begins on the farm, which includes Patricia dumping a load of incapacitated chickens into the barn for the captured Walkers to feast. Apparently after Glenn’s late night discovery, Maggie managed to keep him quiet. Unfortunately, between the barn and Lori’s pregnancy, Glenn spills all his secrets to Dale. Hershel tells Dale to keep it to himself and mind his own business, because the “people” in the barn are just “sick.” Lori discusses her situation with him and asks Glenn to go back to town to get her some “morning after pills.” During their trip at the pharmacy, Glenn saves Maggie from a Walker attack.

The Group continues the search for Sophia. Lori is confronted by Glenn about her pregnancy, which she wants to keep hidden until she decides what to do, if anything. Daryl becomes injured and stranded in the woods, having hallucinations of his lost brother, Merle. Shane tries to convince Rick to call off the search for Sophia, but Rick sticks to his decision. Hershel becomes frustrated with the Group as they seem to overstep their boundaries and their welcome around his property. Andrea becomes more unbearable. While Glenn is waiting for another nighttime rendezvous with Maggie, he discovers a horrifying secret about their hosts.

Shane and Otis are stuck in the local high school, completely surrounded by Walkers. They split up to escape, hoping to meet up outside in a safe area. Rick and Lori continue to watch over an unconscious Carl, but Hershel informs them that a decision needs to be made soon if Shane and Otis do not return with the necessary medical equipment. Lori thinks that maybe it’d be best to let Carl die peacefully instead of face this cruel new world everyday, but Rick doesn’t agree. Glenn and T-Dog arrive at the farmhouse, where T-Dog’s life-threatening cut is stitched up and Glenn makes a better acquaintance of Maggie.

Episode Title: Bloodletting

The episode opens with a flashback of the day Rick was initially shot. Shane meets Lori outside of Carl’s school to deliver the news and watches from afar as Lori tells Carl. Cut to present day, Rick runs through a field struggling to carry his son who was just accidentally shot in the woods. Trailing are Shane and the shooter, Otis. Rick comes upon a serene farm and calls for Hershel, as directed by Otis. Hershel examines Carl and informs Rick and Shane that the bullet shattered and he has to remove all six pieces to save Carl. In order to be successful, Hershel needs a long list of medical equipment. Shane and Otis, also a former EMT, volunteer to get everything from a nearby abandoned FEMA station.

Episode Title: What Lies Ahead

Time for Season 2: The Farm. After the CDC plan literally blows up in the Group’s face, they decide to head to Fort Benning, which is a daunting 125 miles away, during which they are stopped by a pile-up of hundreds of abandoned cars on the highway and a busted RV hose. While Dale is repairing the RV, a herd of Walkers comes through, forcing the Group to hide under the abandoned cars. Before the coast is clear, 12-year-old Sophia tries to crawl out and is grabbed by a Walker. She manages to escape but runs off into the woods, followed by a couple of the undead. Rick goes to rescue her, but must leave her in the woods alone to draw off the Walkers. When he returns, she is gone.

The episode opens with a flashback to Shane trying to rescue a comatose Rick from the hospital as the military begins executing both Walkers and humans in the hallways. Unable to save his friend, Shane leaves, but not before securing Rick’s door, so no one or no thing can enter. Cut to the present, and the group is allowed into the CDC by the only remaining scientist, Jenner. They shower, eat, get drunk and sleep without any worry, except for Lori who was almost raped by Shane in the rec room.
