Reviewing a show that airs on Netflix is a lot different that writing about a show that is made by almost any other company. Its episodes are dropped all at once, so on September 30th you could have spent 13 hours, watched every second of the show, and not have to worry about tuning in for an hour each of the next 12 weeks. While you can avoid hearing specific spoilers about the show, keeping the suspense that the creators of the show hoped to provide almost 100% pure, it is much harder to avoid the general talk about the show. Is the show a hit, and even if it is, what are peoples biggest complaints and what did the viewers tend to enjoy. I want to address a couple of those complaints at the start of this article because I think it is important and because I completely disagree with them. Continue reading Luke Cage S:01 E:02

Episode Title: Moment of Truth
Originally Aired: September 30th 2016

Luke Cage the latest from the collaboration between Marvel and Netflix that brought us such hits as Daredevil seasons 1 and 2 and the first season of Jessica Jones. Jessica Jones just won the first ever Emmy for a Marvel television show, for intro music, and based on the hype surrounding the soundtrack for Luke Cage it will not be the first. Buffy The Vampire Slayer S:04 Ep:11

Episode Title: Doomed

Original Air Date: January 18, 2000

What’s this? Sitting around watching the telly while there’s evil still afoot? That’s not very industrious of you. I say we go out there and kick a little demon ass! What, can’t go without your Buffy, is that it? Too chicken? Let’s find her! She is the Chosen One after all. Come on! Vampires! Grrr! Nasty! Let’s annihilate them. For Justice, and for… the safety of puppies… and Christmas, right? Let’s fight that evil! Let’s kill something! Oh, come on!” – Spike

Following on directly from the end of the previous episode which ended with Buffy and Riley in her dorm room now knowing the truth about each other, that he is part of “The Initiative” and that she is the Slayer. Of course it soon become clear that neither one knows about the existence of the other despite the fact that they are both fighting the same war against the forces of darkness.

However despite the couple more than happy to continue with their relationship despite the fact that neither is quite the normal college student that they first seemed, its a peace that is short lived as the campus is hit with an earthquake sending Buffy into a panic seeing how the last earthquake to hit Sunnydale prophecised her death in the season one finale. Now fearing that it could mean the same for her again amidst warning of a forthcoming apocalypse she launches an investigation soon discovering a trio of demons with plans to try and open the Hellmouth.

Episode Title: Hush

Original Air Date: December 14, 1999

“All the time you used to talk to me about witchcraft and darkness and the like – I just thought you were being pretentious.” – Olivia

So here we are only four season into the run and here we have the best Buffy episode ever. Seriously if you’re looking for a high water mark for the series then this episode would be it!

What makes this episode so great though is the setup as a group of fairytale monsters known as “The Gentlemen” steal the voices of everyone in Sunnydale as part of their plot to collect seven hearts leaving Buffy and the Scoobies with the dilemma of how to stop them when none of them can speak.

Episode Title: Something Blue

Original Air Date: November 30, 1999

“This is the crack team that foils my every plan? I am deeply shamed.” – Spike

Despite Oz being gone for a couple of episode now, for some reason the writers felt that this was the perfect time to have Willow mope over his departure. Things however are only made worse when her emotional state causes her to unwittingly start to lose control of her powers.

This is one of those episode which could have turned out so wrong in the hands of other writers but instead of giving us the expected episode of teen angst and general moping about here turns into something pretty special let alone surprisingly amusing as the most casual statement made by Willow starts coming true. As such Xander becomes a demon magnet, Giles goes blind and more shockingly Spike proposes to Buffy!!

Episode Title: Pangs

Original Air Date: November 23, 1999

“And the thing is, I like my evil like I like my men. Evil. You know, ‘straight up, black hate, tied to the train tracks, soon my electro-ray will destroy metropolis’ bad. Not all mixed up with guilt and the destruction of an indigenous culture.” – Buffy

Thanksgiving has come to Sunnydale and with her mother out of town visiting her aunt; Buffy is left wanting to throw a thanksgiving celebration with her friends. At the same time when he accidently falls into a tomb beneath the college campus Xander unwittingly releases Hus, a Native American vengeance spirit

It seems that no one can celebrate a holiday in Sunnydale without something happening and this week it’s the turn of thanksgiving in an episode I honestly couldn’t remember seeing before much like “Gingerbread” which on one hand is great because it means getting to essentially watch a new episode and getting all the suprises which come with watching it for the first time. On the downside it was this episode which for the most part really is kind of a non-starter which really is only the more surprising when you look at all the pieces in play here.

Preacher S:01 E:09

Episode Title: Finish The Song
Originally Aired: July 24th 2016

With only one episode left this season of AMC’s Preacher, everyone is shown preparing in his or her own way for Jesse’s climatic sermon next Sunday. Some people like Odin spend their time as if it was any other week, which apparently includes window side whiskey and an office fight club. His story is seemingly over, he will play a part in next week’s episode but it will most likely be one of pure reaction. His biggest role this season has already played out where he shows Jesse a loophole in his ability. That people of different beliefs may not be affected in the way he would anticipate. Preacher S:01 E:08

Episode Title: El Valero
Originally Aired: July 17th 2016

The Highlight of the eighth episode of AMC’s Preacher at least for me was Jackie Earle Haley’s Odin Quincannon. I have always been a fan of Haley ever since I saw him in Breaking Away and The Bad News Bears when I was a kid, and this episode finally answered the question of why he was here other than money.
