Supergirl S01:E11

Episode Title: Strange Visitor From Another Planet

Original Airdate: 25-1-2016

Martians. Although our real-world explorations of our nearest planetary neighbour have not – as yet – uncovered any proof of alien life, the comic book medium allows us to venture to far off galaxies and their associated worlds to explore the gamut of alien life that brings with it. Traditionally, DC has used Mars as the source of one of its most popular secondary characters, J’onn J’onzz (considered one of the Big Seven members of the Justice League), aka the Martian Manhunter, who assumes humanoid form on Earth but is actually a green martian from Mars. In DC lore, the Greens weren’t the only species of Martian on Mars; white, red and blue Martians also abounded, typically analogous to contemporary human frictions with all the anger, hate and sense of justified war that comes with it. With his reveal a few episodes ago, J’onzz, who has appropriated the form of Hank Henshaw (David Harewood) here on Earth, somewhat ironically in charge of the DEO, has become a bona-fide source of story success for Supergirl in her first season on television. Now we get to see DC unveil the Martian mythology to its fullest, in “Strange Visitor From Another Planet”, an episode title that might initially seem focused on the show’s star, but resonates hardest with its – until now – least accessible character.

Legends of Tomorrow S:01 E:01

Episode Title: Pilot
Original Airdate: 1-21-16

It’s time for the second of the new midseason series before Lucifer wraps things up for now next week. Legends of Tomorrow is the spin-off from the CW’s Flash and Arrow where it takes several of their secondary characters and turns them into a team of time traveling misfits led by an Englishman from the future who feels an awful lot like a slightly nicer version of Constantine. And while I haven’t watched too much of Arrow, the pilot feels like it was cut from the same cloth as Flash, only with a little more humor, a little more action, and a little less gravitas. For now anyway. And for what it was worth, I had a lot of fun with it.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer S:03 Ep:01

Episode Title: Anne

Original Air Date: September 29, 1998

“You don’t hide. You’re bait. Go act baity.” – Xander

So last time we left Buffy and the Scoobies things were left in a mixture of celebration and sadness as Buffy stopped Sunnydale and the world being sucked into hell at the cost of sending Angel to hell instead. The season ending with Buffy on a bus and seemingly leaving Sunnydale and her responsibilities as the slayer behind her. Now re-joining them at the start of season 3, several months have now passed and Buffy is now living in Los Angeles working and disguising herself by working as a waitress under her middle name Anne. Meanwhile Willow, Xander and Oz are attempting to pick up Buffy’s slayer duties by continuing patrols with mixed results as they manage to lose as many vampires as they slay.

Fear not though as this show hasn’t turned into Buffy the waitress with her having to deal with folks refusing to tip or being sexually harassed by jackass customers, as despite leaving Sunnydale trouble still has a way of finding her as she soon finds herself helping fellow runaway Lily whose boyfriend mysteriously disappeared only to reappear as an old man

Arrow S:04 E:10

Episode Title: Blood Debt
Original Airdate: 1-20-16

While a lot of people had issues with Season 3, I’m finding this season a much tougher one to enjoy. Though there’s still more episodes left in Season 4 than we’ve seen so far this mid-season return did little to inspire confidence the issues will get resolved. Continue reading Arrow S:04 E:10

The Flash S:02 E:10

Episode Title: Potential Energy
Original Airdate: 1-19-16

And we’re back into the swing of things with this first week full of CW DC shows starting off with the return of the Flash, followed by Arrow’s return today and the premier of Legends of Tomorrow, well tomorrow. This was an episode that as usual had a great mix of humor and gravitas where many characters learned a lot about each other except for the one secret that this episode was essentially built all around. Not only that, but it also ends with the return of yet another character from season one, but in a very different form.

Agent Carter S:02 E: 1 & 2

Episode Titles:
E1: The Lady in the Lake
E2: A View in the Dark

Originally Aired: January 19th 2016

Welcome back to post World War II America and the world of our favorite Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR) agent Peggy Carter (Haley Atwell). Tonight was the 2 hour premier for the second season of ABC’s Agent Carter, it will continue to air every Tuesday night for the next 9 weeks leading to the return of Agents of Shield from its winter break. There is a kind of poetry to the two shows being linked together because they seem to be following the same path. Season one has some good moments but is mostly unmet potential, and season two sees an increase in action and improved story lines. I enjoyed season one of Agent Carter but of the 10 episodes that have been televised, tonight’s episodes are first and second. There is so much that is new, things that are improved, but it is undeniably the same Agent Carter. The writers and producers took a tarnished piece of silver and shined it up really nice.

Supergirl S01:E10

Episode Title: Childish Things

Original Airdate: 18-1-2015

Family ties. Supergirl has spent the majority of its first season dealing primarily with the subject of family: Kara’s relationship with her Kryptonian lineage, via mother Alura and aunt Astra, as well as her Earthly bonds in adopted sister Alex, mother Eliza (Helen Slater) and father (Dean Cain). Some time has also been spent with Kara’s boss, Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), with hints of her sad emotional history bubbling away just below the superficial surface. Among those we really haven’t spent time with particularly include Kara’s CatCo ally Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan), who comes into focus this episode when his father, the murderous “Toyman”, Winslow Schott Snr (Henry Czerny), escapes from maximum security and comes after his progeny.
