iZombie S:01 E:03

Episode Title: The Exterminator
Original Airdate: 3-31-15

iZombie is back with another strong episode, if you’re not watching this show yet you really should be. It reminds me of Buffy in several ways besides the fact that it has a strong female lead and plenty of quick, witty dialogue. What it really does well that Buffy also did is to take aspects of real life and filter them through this extremely bizarre premise to make it allegorical. Besides that, there’s great characters all around and still a bit of an overarching mystery that is inching its way along in the sidelines. Plus, this episode has a small role from Brian Krakow from My So-Called Life, I haven’t seen that actor in ages, and boy does he look extremely different. I’m sure my wife would tell me that he could give Jordan Catalano a run for his money now. But I’m getting a ways away from the subject at hand here.

Episode: Brother, Can You Spare a Brain?
Original Airdate: 3-24-15

Liv and company are back again this week with another strong offering that really jumps into a few the heart of what format this show will ultimately follow. There’s a bit more fleshing out of what happens to Liv when she gets her brain fix with hilarious results, and there’s also the introduction of the darker side of the undead with the first real introduction of the guy who seemingly started it all and hasn’t really stopped yet, Blaine. This show is already growing on me more than any of the other shows I’ve been watching the past couple years. Liv is adorable and funny as the lead, and this episode introduces how she will be able to adjust her personality depending on who the victim was each week. And the Blaine subplot is one that has the potential to explore the darker side of the zombie trade.

Episode Title: Pilot
Original Airdate: 3-17-2015

I have never watched a single episode of Veronica Mars, nor had I even heard of the comic iZombie before this show came on my radar. Not only that, but my experience with the “nice zombie” genre has been fairly mediocre. While I enjoyed Warm Bodies, I wasn’t too fond of Life After Beth, and this felt like it could fit right along those lines. Instead, I got a really likable main character with Liv, and a really hilarious detective show. I’ve heard it called “Veronica Mars meets Buffy” and while I already mentioned that I’ve never seen one of those shows, based on this first episode and what I know of the other’s fanbase, I could get on board with that. From the very beginning, I am hooked on this show and really looking forward to where it takes off from here.
