Gotham S:02 E:03

Episode Title: The Last Laugh
Original Airdate: 10-6-15

I’m still neck deep in my love/hate relationship with Gotham even as we round the corner past the first mini-arc of season two. For every character that I love, there’s a character that I equally hate. For every scene that I love, there’s a scene that just rubs me the wrong way. And even in an episode that I really enjoyed overall, there were still a handful of scenes and moments that made me want to shake my head in annoyment. I was honestly on the edge of rage-quitting this show last episode based on all the headway they were making with baby Joker, then I watch this episode and I enjoy almost everything about it. Again, except for the direction that they’re still going with the Joker. It just keeps me hanging on by a thread week after week, though if the ratings continue in their direction this show won’t be around for a third season.

31 Days of Tales From the Crypt S:02 E:14

Welcome back to day 3 of our 31 Days of Tales From the Crypt here at Channel Superhero, I am your cryptkeeper host Bubbawheat guiding you through the various bloggers and episodes that we are taking a look at this October. Today’s review comes from David Brook who generally writes various editorial articles as well as older cult-ish films over at Blueprint: Review alongside their coverage of new release films, I obviously approve of the use of a colon in their site’s title. Being from across the pond in the UK, he chose one of my recommended episodes which was an episode I rather enjoyed, but also knew that it was a very odd one in terms of tone and subject matter. I will also note one thing that he didn’t mention, that this was a nice touch to give a little origin story to the Cryptkeeper which made me enjoy it all the more. But enough about me, let’s hear what David thought of Lower Berth.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer S:02 Ep:07

Episode title: Lie To Me

Original air date: November 3, 1997

“Things used to be pretty simple. A hundred years, just hanging out, feeling guilty. I really honed by brooding skills. Then she comes along.” – Angel

Another underrated episode this week as Buffy’s duties as a slayer once again attract the wrong kind of attention, this time from her friend Ford who has recently transferred from L.A. to Sunnydale. Little does she know that Ford is also a member of group of vampire fantasists with Ford soon making a deal with Spike to hand him Buffy in exchange for Spike turning him into a vampire.

Gotham S:02 E:02

Episode title: Knock, Knock
Original Airdate: 9-29-15

For the entire run of the first season, I have been very hit and miss with this show. There are enough people who enjoy it that it has gotten to a second season and has had mediocre ratings for the first two episodes in this arc that they’re referring to as “Rise of the Villains”, but for my part it seems like this episode has pushed me past “giving it another chance” into the realm of the hate-watching. There are so many decisions that this show makes that I completely disagree with. The characters feel wrong, and while I’m not one of those people who think that the show should slavishly follow the comics, for one thing there is no such thing as slavishly following the comics as the comics have had so many different variations that there is no singular vision anywhere. They are trying to make their own mythology in this show, but it just doesn’t feel like it’s a mythology that I’m interested in with the exception of just a couple stand out characters.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer S:02 Ep:06

“I’m gonna do what any man would do about it: somethin’ damn manly” – Xander

Halloween has come to Sunnydale this week and while you might expect it to be a hotbed of supernatural activity, its actually the opposite it seems with Halloween seemingly being considered a holiday of sorts for the supernatural. This however doesn’t mean it’s an easy week for the Scoobies as this week they have to deal with a case of personality switching when they fall foul of their Halloween costumes changing their wearer into their costumed personas.

Episode Title: Damned if You Do…
Original Airdate: 9-21-15

It’s been a while, but aside from Fear the Walking Dead which is a cable show and not exactly on the typical Fall network schedule we are back into the 2015/2016 television season and the first one out of the gate is Fox’s Gotham. Last season was very hit and miss with me and seemingly the rest of the audience. Many fans of Batman that I know of didn’t enjoy the campy and over the top nature of some of the characters, but other people still really enjoyed the character arcs and look of the show. For myself, I went back and forth from episode to episode. I wasn’t a fan of Fish Mooney’s caricatured portrayal of a villain, but I enjoyed some of the other characters and really enjoyed the look of the show. This season kicks off with more of the same at the moment, with several returning villains from last season and everyone in a very different situation more or less.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer S:02 Ep:05

Episode title: Reptile Boy

Original air date: October 13, 1997

“One day I’ll have money. Prestige. Power. And on that day they’ll still have more.” – Xander

Kind of a weird episode this week as Buffy investigates a missing high school student, while struggling once more to balance a normal life outside of her slayer responsibilities. At the same time her confused feelings for Angel lead to her attending a frat party with Cordelia only to discover that the fraternity members hide more than a few secrets of their own.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer S:02 Ep:04

“Oh, I know this one! ‘Slaying entails certain sacrifices, blah blah bliddy blah, I’m so stuffy, give me a scone.’” – Buffy

So after the excitement of last week’s episode things are toned down this week as Buffy has to deal with a life force sucking mummy called Ampata who is preying on unsuspecting souls to maintain her human form. Things of course only get worse when Xander falls for her unaware of the secret she hides.

Episode title: School Hard

Original air date: September 29, 1997

“You were my sire, man! You were my … YODA!” – Spike

For some reason I thought this episode came later in the season but this current rewatch only highlighted how early in this season the showrunners were working on their endgame for the season as this week we get the first appearance of Spike and Drusilla, two characters who would go on to play major roles in not only this series but “Angel” aswell. Not that we could have ever known this by this first appearance when they seemed like another villain of the week, but unquestionably here the duo certainly make their mark with their debut.

Unaware of the threat of Spike and Drusilla this week sees Buffy once more struggling to balance her slayer duties and school life and once more putting her in the sights of Principal Snyder, who pairs Buffy with fellow problem student Sheila to prepare the school lounge for the parent-teacher night or risk being expelled. Of course this event will serve for the climax of the episode with Spike launching an assault on the school. Continue reading Buffy The Vampire Slayer S:02 Ep:03

The Walking Dead Season:02

The Walking Dead Season 2

At the time of its original airing, I really liked Season 2 of The Walking Dead. I rebuffed all the haters who complained on a weekly basis that the time on the Farm was dragging out and the Group needed to move on. I was convinced that the writers were keeping the Group there to really build the characters for us and it was easier to do so if everyone stayed put for awhile instead of giving us action-packed episodes full of Walker killing. I was wrong.
